Course Content

In this Webinar the significance of Long QT interval will be explored.

With changing professional expectations and the advent of patients with Long QT interval due to antidepressant overdose being monitored in wards with telemetry, it becomes expected knowledge of the nurse caring for this patient.

This interesting but potentially life-threatening cardiac disorder has been missed in patients and led to sudden cardiac death especially in the youth.

A nurse with knowledge of the presentation of cardiac events with a LQT interval will be able to communicate their assessment with the medical officer and with timely intervention prevent potentially lethal complications.

Learning Outcomes

In this session you will:
  • Gain an understanding of how Long QT interval is a potentially life-threatening situation
  • Examine how to measure a QT interval
  • Recognise the link to antidepressant drugs and development of a potentially dangerous long QT interval
  • Explore the importance of why a nurse in the telemetry ward must have knowledge and be able to measure a long QT interval
