Cardiac Assessment and Management Course

Cardiac ECG Interpretation and Assessment

This is an essential course for all Nurses. Cardiovascular disease is responsible for more deaths globally than any other single disease. The prevalence of this disease combined with the ageing population creates significant practice issues and challenges for all clinical nurses working in acute care, midwifery, and community settings. This course will expand your knowledge in the assessment of life-threatening arrhythmias, interpretation of ECG, angina, myocardial infarction, as well as a number of other common cardiac disorders.
CPD Hours: 18

This course is ideal for:

Any Nurse working in critical care, coronary care, emergency departments as well as general ward areas. It is designed not only for the critical care areas but ideal for the Nurse in a telemetry ward or any Nurse who performs a 12 lead ECG for a patient with chest pain.

The changing environment in health has led to a lack of access to advanced care settings such as critical care units as they may not be available. Therefore, Nurses in all areas require both basic and more advanced clinical knowledge and skills in this area of care to manage these patients across a range of clinical settings.

Paramedics interested in ECG interpretation would also benefit from this course.

You’ll learn:

  • The vital foundation of interpretation of sinus rhythm, which is essential knowledge of every Registered Nurse

  • Interpretation of Life-threatening arrhythmias especially relating to the understanding of PEA (Pulseless Electrical Activity) and VT (Ventricular tachycardia)

  • The treatment of PEA and VT according to the Australian & NZ Committee of Resuscitation guidelines (ANZCOR)

  • About sudden cardiac death in young people, and understand how it can be related to the Long QT interval syndrome which can be hereditary or due to a side effect of medication
“P QRS T with no pulse = PEA. Took 29 years for this to be explained so simply it made sense. I was waiting for polarization, repolarization and all that stuff that leaves me numb and I actually now feel confident reading the telemetry screen. Winner!!”

"Anne took what can be scary and complex and gave us tools to save our patients. Her immense knowledge allows her to come at concepts from different angles until we understand."
– Karen
"I love the way Anne teaches arrhythmias, starting simply even with humour and then moving onto complex arrhythmias, I finally get it!"
– Suzanne
"I like the way her lectures are similar to the text book, as I can go over the content later and look at the exercises at the end of the chapter."

– Emily
"I am not a cardiac Nurse, and was so pleased that recently I noticed the QT interval had prolonged on a patient who had an overdose of antidepressants."

Why Anne thinks all Nurses should do this course

Not every Nurse can attend face-to-face lectures or seminars, and I wanted to create a course available at all times for busy Nurses. My goal was to create a course that was different from other webinars. I have been teaching interpretation of arrhythmias and 12 lead ECGs for many years and have found it more effective when it is interactive.

I like to add a bit of humour into the important concepts to make them interesting, to influence Nurses to become experts at reading ECGs and rhythms and also assist them in developing confidence in their knowledge. Nursing CPD worked with me to develop the interactive format of this cardiac course allowing me to assist the students as they progress through many of the exercises

This course is for:

  • The Nurse in coronary care, critical care, emergency and cardiothoracic units. Every Nurse in these specialist areas must have expert cardiac knowledge.
  • Nurses working in other areas such as dialysis, managing patients with diabetes, surgical wards, medical units, rehabilitation units to name a few where staff will find these co-morbidities existing in a large number of their patients.
  • All Nurses working with patients with both acute and chronic illnesses, Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and kidney disease are the three most common illnesses in Australia. These three diseases often occur together.
  • Nurses working in the area of telemetry. The growth of telemetry in both specialist units and general ward situations has heightened the Nurse’s responsibility to ensure their knowledge regarding cardiac arrhythmias and ECG interpretation is current and reflects best practice guidelines.
  • Psychiatric Nurses and Nurses working in general wards areas where the incidence of the serious life-threatening side effects of long QT interval will be seen in patients taking certain medication.

You’ll will also learn:

  • To interpret a 12 lead ECG identifying angina, anterior and inferior STEMI
  • The presentation and clinical assessment of Takotsubo syndrome and other disorders
  • How to recognise a patient deteriorating with a cardiac disorder
  • How to interpret deterioration of a monitored patient
  • The effects of Illicit drugs on the heart
  • How syncope or mild fitting can be misdiagnosed and relate this to the LQT interval syndrome
  • The vital role ward Nurses have in managing a patient after an antidepressant overdose and the required knowledge of all Nurses in this serious disorder of long QT
  • How to perform the clinical assessment of a collapsed patient
  • The common arrhythmia associated with a post-op haemorrhage or trauma
  • The foundation of interpretation of sinus rhythm
  • The warning signs of impending cardiac arrest on the telemetry monitor
  • The R on T phenomenon
  • How a patient with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) presents and the gender issues on presentation
  • SCAD – Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection
  • The three common tachycardias seen on telemetry:
  • Sinus tachycardia
  • Supraventricular tachycardia
  • Ventricular tachycardia
