Course Content

Osteoporosis is a silent condition that many won't know they have until they fracture, often with catastrophic results for quality of life. Age is one of the biggest risks, but there are plenty of modifiable risk factors that can reduce the chance of breaking a bone, and there are effective treatments available to further reduce the risk, providing they're used appropriately.

Whether you work in primary care, hospital, or aged care, you're likely to be find patients who are at high risk of fracture and it's important to be able to identify who's at highest risk.

This webinar incorporates the newest advice from the updated August 2026 Therapeutic
Guidelines around screening and risk assessment tools to uncover those who would benefit from treatment to reduce fracture risk.

It discusses first line treatment options, as well as those medications that are reserved for those at highest risk, or continue to fracture despite using standard therapy. Finally, it will provide you with some non-pharmacological measures we can raise with patients to optimise bone strength.

Why this session may be relevant to your work

This webinar is relevant to my nursing practice because it strengthens my ability to identify patients at increased risk of osteoporosis and fracture, recognise modifiable risk factors, and provide evidence-based education about treatment, falls prevention and bone health. It also updates my knowledge of current screening, risk assessment and treatment recommendations, supporting early intervention and improved patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:
  • Describe the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and identify key risk factors
  • Explain screening pathways, diagnostic thresholds, and fracture risk tools used in primary care
  • Outline current pharmacological treatment options and their place in therapy
  • Describe lifestyle measures that reduce fracture risk
