Course Content

This webinar provides a clear, practical overview of the codes, standards, scope of practice, and ethical frameworks that govern nursing and midwifery practice in Australia.
It explains how the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) uses these documents to protect the public while supporting clinicians to practise safely, legally, and professionally across diverse roles and settings.

Participants will explore key principles of the Code of Conduct, including person-centred care, cultural safety, professional integrity, confidentiality, and professional boundaries, supported by realistic case studies drawn from everyday practice.

The session emphasises that these documents are not merely regulatory requirements but practical tools nurses and midwives can use to guide decision-making, negotiate safe workloads, clarify responsibilities, and protect their own professional standing.

By translating regulatory language into real-world scenarios, the webinar equips participants to recognise risks early, respond appropriately to ethical dilemmas, and maintain safe, respectful care for patients, families, colleagues, and communities.

Why this Session may be Relevant to your Work

This knowledge supports safe, lawful, and ethical decision-making in everyday practice, helps me maintain appropriate professional boundaries, and ensures I provide care that meets regulatory expectations. It also enables me to recognise and respond to situations that may place patients, colleagues, or my registration at risk, and to advocate for safe practice within my workplace.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:
  • Explain the purpose of NMBA codes, standards, and guidelines in regulating safe nursing and midwifery practice in Australia.
  • Apply key principles of the Code of Conduct — including person-centred care, cultural safety, and professional integrity — to everyday clinical situations.
  • Identify risks related to professional boundaries, confidentiality, delegation, and scope of practice using case-based examples.
