Course Content

Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury, hospitalisation, extended length of stay, and loss of independence among older adults and other vulnerable patient populations. In healthcare settings, falls can result in significant physical, psychological, and financial consequences, including fractures, head injuries, reduced confidence, fear of falling, and increased care needs.

The webinar provides an overview of the key recommendations and highlights the most important concepts. As the guidelines are comprehensive and detailed, the webinar offers a practical summary that will help you understand the content more efficiently and make the subsequent reading easier to follow.

As frontline healthcare professionals, nurses play a critical role in identifying patients at risk and implementing effective prevention strategies to reduce falls-related harm.

This webinar will provide nurses with practical, evidence-based knowledge and skills to enhance falls prevention across acute care, rehabilitation, aged care, and community settings. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the multifactorial nature of falls and the complex interplay between intrinsic risk factors, such as age-related changes, cognitive impairment, delirium, continence issues, medication use, mobility limitations, and chronic health conditions and extrinsic factors including environmental hazards and organisational influences.

The session will explore current best-practice approaches to falls risk assessment. Nurses will learn how to identify high-risk patients, recognise common contributing factors, and develop individualised care plans that address specific patient needs. A multidisciplinary approach to falls prevention will be emphasized, highlighting the important contributions of nursing, medical, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and support staff in promoting patient safety.

Practical strategies that can be incorporated into everyday clinical practice will be discussed, examples include, education on footwear, medication review, environmental modifications, continence management, and patient and family education
