Course Outline: Cardiac Assessment and Management

This course has been designed to reflect the changing professional expectations and educational requirements of providing expert assessment for a growing cohort of patients suffering cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is responsible for more deaths globally than any other single disease. The prevalence of this disease combined with the ageing population creates significant practice issues and challenges for all clinical nurses working in acute care, midwifery, and community settings.
Patients with cardiac co-morbidity now present in all areas of health care.

This course will assist you to expand your knowledge in the assessment for life-threatening arrhythmias, diagnosis of angina, myocardial infarction as well as a number of common cardiac disorders.

Who is this course for:

  • Any Nurse working in critical care, coronary care, emergency departments as well as general ward areas. It is designed not only for the critical care areas but ideal for the Nurse in a telemetry ward or any Nurse who performs a 12 lead ECG for a patient with chest pain.
  • The changing environment in health has led to a lack of access to advanced care settings such as critical care units as they may not be available. Therefore, Nurses in all areas require both basic and more advanced clinical knowledge and skills in this area of care to manage these patients across a range of clinical settings.
  • Paramedics interested in ECG interpretation would also benefit from this course.

Module Overviews

I am not a cardiac nurse, and was so pleased that recently I noticed the QT interval had prolonged on a patient who had an overdose of antidepressants. I was able to ring the doctor and tell him exactly what I saw and that I needed an urgent review. I would never have been able to do this prior to the lecture.
