Culture and cultural beliefs can have a significant impact on how people from different cultural backgrounds engage with health, disability and aged care services.

The impact is often even greater for those not used to Western medical models.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:
  • Create awareness of the impact that culture has on accessing health services and the quality of that healthcare.
  • Examine cultural beliefs about causes of and responses to pain and illness.
  • Learn about the effects of life experiences for some groups of migrants
  • Develop and apply culturally respectful responses to pain and illness.

With more than 10 years experience in supporting people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds in a variety of contexts, Silvia has joined Diversicare in September 2011 as the Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care (PICAC) training officer. She has since been researching, developing and delivering training modules focused in culturally appropriate care for older Australians.
