Course Content

Delirium is a rapid change in mental functioning. It usually arises over hours or days. This fast speed of onset is characteristic of delirium and contrasts with dementia which typically develops slowly over months or years. Increasing age, dementia, frailty, multiple co-morbidities, and sensory impairments all increase the risk of delirium.

Delirium occurs in 10-30% of hospitalized older adults, more than 50% of post-operative hospitalized patients, 70-80% of patients in the ICU, up to 60% of nursing home residents over age 75 may have delirium at any time, and the 1 year mortality rate is 35-40 percent. In this webinar we will explore delirium in the acute care environment. The Australian Delirium Clinical Care Standard will be referenced.

The webinar content will focus on the causes of delirium, the assessment process for identifying delirium, the treatment for delirium, and how organisational procedures may assist in preventing delirium.
