Course Content

Epilepsy and seizures are a complex neurological spectrum disorder that affects people in highly individual ways, with seizure types and symptoms varying widely from person to person. While some individuals may experience evolving or escalating seizure patterns, the majority tend to have consistent and repeatable seizure types.

This webinar provides a comprehensive overview of epilepsy and seizure management, equipping participants with critical knowledge to recognise, respond to, and support individuals experiencing seizures.

Key Highlights Include:
Understanding epilepsy as a Spectrum Disorder: Learn about the wide range of seizure types and the underlying mechanisms that cause sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain.

Seizure Classification and Terminology: Explore the latest International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) seizure classification, which organises seizures by onset location and symptom types—including motor and non-motor categories—for clarity and better management. Discover that up to 10% of the population may experience a seizure in their lifetime, with most lasting less than 5 minutes.

Some seizures, such as status epilepticus (SE), are a medical emergency characterised by prolonged or repeated seizures without complete recovery between them. It requires immediate medical intervention to prevent permanent brain damage or death.

Additionally, you will gain practical skills in seizure first aid. What to do, what not to do, and how to ensure safety without causing harm, with an emphasis on protecting the person from injury, monitoring and timing the seizure, as well as observing the patterns of the seizure and documenting.

Anne will also address Seizure Action Plans and Postictal Management. Understand how to follow individualised seizure plans, ensure airway protection, manage the postictal (recovery) phase, and prevent further episodes.

This session is ideal for healthcare professionals, educators, and anyone who may encounter someone with epilepsy or convulsions. Attendees will leave with greater confidence and practical knowledge to respond effectively and compassionately to seizure events.

In case you need help with why this session may be relevant to your work

10% of the population may experience a seizure in their lifetime - with this in mind I need to be aware of the latest management of same.
