Course Content

This webinar addresses the obstacle of developing assertiveness to use in challenging situations by combining assertiveness techniques with practical guidance on confidently conveying your opinions and concerns both in the workplace and your personal life.

Many people struggle to set boundaries, say no, or address disrespectful behaviour, which can lead to stress, anxiety, resentment, and emotional exhaustion. Assertiveness is not about being confrontational, it is about communicating clearly, respectfully, and confidently while maintaining self-respect.

Participants will learn structured, easy-to-use techniques to help establish and maintain healthy boundaries, manage difficult conversations, and respond calmly in challenging situations. Through role-play and real-life examples, the presenters will demonstrate how different communication styles—passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive—impact relationships.

The webinar will also explore how non-verbal communication influences how messages are received, including body language, posture, and tone. Two powerful techniques, the Grey Rock and Broken Record, will be taught as practical “procedures” that can be learnt and used to protect emotional wellbeing, reduce conflict, and increase confidence.

By developing assertiveness skills, participants can strengthen personal relationships, enhance self-esteem, reduce stress, and feel empowered to communicate their needs and limits clearly—without guilt or fear. Please join Sue and Anne as they perform role-play, demonstrating the wrong way to handle difficult situations, and then demonstrate practical tips to communicate clearly, boost confidence, enhance self-worth, and strengthen professional effectiveness.

Why this Session may be Relevant to your Work

Nurses often need to speak up about patient safety, question decisions, escalate concerns, and set boundaries in high-pressure environments. Assertiveness skills help you communicate clearly and confidently so important information is heard and acted on. This supports safe care, effective teamwork, professional advocacy, and your own wellbeing, making it highly relevant education for everyday nursing practice.
