How to Accurately Perform a 12 Lead ECG

This webinar is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of ECG lead placement. If V1 is incorrectly placed on the chest then all the the chest leads will be inaccurate. This can lead to patients being misdiagnosed with many cardiac disorders, such as Brugada syndrome, poor r-wave progression and suspicion of ST-elevation myocardial ischemia, pulmonary embolus and bundle branch block.

Course Content

Studies show that many health professionals who perform 12 lead ECG's are not doing them accurately which is having an impact on patient outcomes. In addition misdiagnosis is leading to unnecessary tests and investigations being performed - costing millions of dollars in health budgets. One recent study indicated nurses misplace ECG leads in up to 64% of all cases with doctors have even more disappointing results.

The webinar will also answer questions that have long been debated by health clinicians. Are the electrodes placed over or under the breast? Do breast implants adversely affect the 12 lead ECG recording? In a torso ECG where are the body leads placed?

In this webinar the presenter will demonstrate with drawings and pictures how to accurately place all the electrodes and give you clinical hints that will enable you to become an expert in performing 12 lead ECG's.

The Nurses For Nurses Network and Anne Evans-Murray have produced this much needed webinar to encourage you to become an expert practitioners and we encourage you to take this knowledge and teach others.

Learning Outcomes

In this session you will:
  • Explore how to place the V leads correctly on the chest wall, using the angle of Louis as the landmark
