Perioperative Anaphylaxis

This webinar will commence with a case history addressing the importance of having a full understanding of our patient allergies.

Anaphylaxis will be defined and the physiology, symptoms and treatment will be discussed following 2022 guidelines from the Australian and New Zealand Anaesthetic Allergy Group (ANZAAG).

Course Content

Although infrequent, potentially catastrophic anaphylactic reactions may occur anytime during the perioperative period thus anaphylaxis continues to be a major concern for all perioperative staff. The effective anticipation, prevention, and treatment of these reactions represent real challenges for all medical and perioperative nursing staff who must work in a close cooperation during these events.

  • Report some findings from the 6th National Audit Program (NAP) from the Royal College of Anaesthetists which focused on Anaphylaxis,
  • Present information on the ‘Pholcodine Hypothesis’.

Dr Paula Foran

Dr Paula Foran comes from a perianaesthesia nursing background. She has many publications to her credit including published articles and several book chapters on perianaesthesia and surgical nursing. Paula currently sits on the ‘Victorian Perioperative Council’ and the case review sub-committee in morbidity and mortality for the Department of Health.
