Course Content

Chronic pain is a major burden on many Australians and opioid therapy continues to be a mainstay of therapy, despite global and local guidelines discouraging their use for chronic non-cancer pain.

In an effort to reduce reliance on opioids, many practitioners try other adjunctive therapies to improve pain but often with mixed results.

This session is designed to equip nurses with a more nuanced, evidence-based approach to managing chronic non-cancer pain. It explores the complexity of chronic pain management, delving into the neuroscience behind what chronic pain is and why that matters for treatment.

From simple analgesics to adjuvant antidepressants, gabapentinoids, and emerging therapies like PEA, you'll get some evidence-based tools to understand why some medicines might be chosen.

Why this session may be relevant to your work

Chronic non-cancer pain is common across all care settings and is associated with significant functional decline, psychological distress, and medication-related harm, particularly from long-term opioid use. This knowledge is important for my work in assessment, monitoring treatment effectiveness, recognising adverse effects, educating patients, and advocating for safer, multimodal care.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:
  • Understand the different neural mechanisms between chronic and acute pain
  • Classify types of chronic pain
  • Recognise some of the more common medicines used to manage chronic non-cancer pain (“adjunct” therapy vs analgesics)
  • Assess some of the risks and benefits of these medicines
