Drug Interactions: What you Don't Know, you Can't Predict

This webinar will equip you with the basic tools to identify common interactions and what you can do about it. It will walk you through the basics of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics so that you can understand why an interaction might be a problem. It will give you an idea of the patients most at risk of interactions, and the drugs that are commonly implicated.

Course Content

With an ageing population that often has a higher burden of chronic disease, we see patients using many medicines together. As polypharmacy increases, so does the risk of drug interactions that may result in adverse effects that range in severity from trivial to life threatening.

While we all have access to software like MIMS or an EMS that might flag combinations, it's not always easy to go researching every medicines list, and not every flagged combination is going to be clinically relevant for our patients.

It will also give you the tools to address potential problems in practice, by identifying the red flags when you should escalate this situation, and will also provide you with some resources to keep learning more about interactions and how best to manage them.

Why this Session may be Relevant to your Work

Medication management is a key nursing role. Drug interactions can be life threatening for patients. It is important that I keep up to date with the latest pharmacology information.

Learning Outcomes

In this session you will:
  • Identify the "usual suspect" drugs most commonly involved in clinically significant interactions
  • Apply a systematic decision-making framework when interactions are identified
  • Determine appropriate monitoring strategies for common high-risk interactions
  • Recognise when to escalate concerns to pharmacists or prescribers
