Reversing Opioid Overdose with Naloxone

With increasing use of opioids (both prescribed and recreational) in Australia comes an increased risk of harm, including the risk of overdose leading to death. This risk though isn't just for those using opioids for non-medical purposes.
This webinar will examine how naloxone should be used, and why we should all ensure it's available wherever opioids are used.

With increasing use of opioids (both prescribed and recreational) in Australia comes an increased risk of harm, including the risk of overdose leading to death. This risk though isn't just for those using opioids for non-medical purposes. In 2022, a quarter of all drug induced deaths were attributed to heroin but opioids as a group accounted for 60% of all deaths. Prescribed opioids for medical use account for more harm in Australia compared with illicit use.

Death due to opioid overdose can be prevented with rapid access to naloxone. It's a reversal agent that when administered quickly, can block the activity of the opioid used and halt the respiratory depression that is usually the cause of death. It's available in a variety of forms, some of which can be administered by non-medical staff, so that opioid users - both illicit and prescribed - can have access to prompt care in the event of an overdose.

This webinar will examine how naloxone should be used, and why we should all ensure it's available wherever opioids are used.
