This session will examine the updated RACGP Diabetes Handbook and Australian Type 2 Diabetes: Glycaemic Management Algorithm.

Course Content

Type 2 diabetes carries a significant disease burden in Australia.

For patients, it means at least one medication, often many medicines, and also a focus on optimising nutrition and physical activity that many find challenging.

For the healthcare system as a whole, diabetes and its related complications require many resources (financial, clinical and educational) for effective treatment.

If treatment is effective and glycaemic targets are reached, the risk of complications like cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy is reduced. Like most other chronic conditions, evidence continues to drive change for guidelines for treatment targets and medicines selections. There have been significant changes in diabetes management guidelines over the last couple of years, and the increasing array of medical options available can be challenging.

This session will examine the updated RACGP Diabetes Handbook and Australian Type 2 Diabetes: Glycaemic Management Algorithm.

It will cover the high risk groups for developing diabetes, and recommendations for screening. It will also discuss what happens after diagnosis, with the medication classes that are recommended for patients who might have different co-morbidities to reduce risk of complications. We will also cover continous glucose monitoring (CGM) and sick day planning.

Why this session may be relevant to your work

No matter where I work as an RN I will come across individual patients who live with diabetes. I need to continually up date my knowledge of diabetes in order to educate and assist these individuals.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:
  • Become familiar with the new algorithm for the treatment of type 2 diabetes
  • Understand why some classes of medicines may be more useful for certain co-morbidities
  • Recognise the co-existence of cardiovascular disease in those with type 2 diabetes
  • Recognise the value of CGM in optimising glycaemic control
