Understanding Cardiac Anatomy:

A Clinical Foundation for Nurses

This informative webinar will examine the structure and function of the heart, including the four chambers, the cardiac valves, the great vessels, and the heart wall layers. We’ll explore how blood flows through the heart and lungs, how the valves ensure unidirectional flow, and how the heart responds to changing demands.

Course Content

A solid understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology is essential for nurses and midwives in all areas of practice. The heart is central to maintaining life—driving circulation, regulating blood flow, and delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body.

For healthcare professionals, understanding how the heart functions at a structural and physiological level is critical for making sense of what happens when the system is under stress, during illness, or in times of increased demand.

With cardiac co-morbidities on the rise at an alarming rate, nurses and midwives are increasingly caring for patients with known or undiagnosed cardiovascular conditions—in every ward, clinic, and community setting, including maternity services. Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and it is no longer confined to specialist cardiac units.

Patients with hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, or valvular disease are present across medical, surgical, perioperative, emergency, and maternal health care settings.
For nurses and midwives, a solid grounding in cardiac anatomy and physiology is essential as understanding how the heart functions enables clinicians to interpret signs and symptoms more accurately, communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute meaningfully to early recognition, risk mitigation, and patient education. As cardiovascular conditions become more common and more complex, this knowledge is no longer optional—it is foundational to safe, informed, and proactive nursing and midwifery care.

Whether you’re refreshing your knowledge or building a stronger foundation in cardiac function, this webinar will enhance your confidence and understanding of how the heart works—setting the stage for better clinical understanding and knowledge with cardiac disorders.

Why this Session may be Relevant to your Work

With cardiac co-morbidities on the rise, nurses and midwives are increasingly caring for patients with known or undiagnosed cardiovascular conditions in every ward, clinic, and community setting, including maternity services. This knowledge will allow me to identify problems and refer earlier providing a better outcome for the client.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:
  • Review the key anatomical structures of the heart, including the atria, ventricles, septum, and coronary vessels
  • Explore the direction of blood flow through the heart and how valves maintain unidirectional flow
  • Gain an understanding of the structure and function of the heart valves: mitral, tricuspid, aortic, and pulmonary valves
  • Recognise the clinical significance of valve disorders, including their impact on cardiac output and patient symptoms
