Understanding Sepsis:

A Medical Emergency

In this webinar, we will explore the critical aspects of sepsis and septic shock, with a strong focus on early recognition, evidence-based management, and timely intervention. You will investigate the latest definitions and diagnostic criteria of sepsis and septic shock, identification of common sources of infection, and clinical red flags. The use of clinical tools such as qSOFA and the "Sepsis Six" bundle will be explained as well as an overview of sepsis pathophysiology.

Course Content

Sepsis remains a leading cause of hospital mortality worldwide, often progressing rapidly and silently from a simple infection to life-threatening multi-organ failure.

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of sepsis, integrating current evidence with practical tools to support frontline healthcare professionals in identifying and responding to this medical emergency. This knowledge is especially vital for intensive care and emergency nurses, who are often the first to observe subtle signs of deterioration. However, it is equally essential for ward-based nurses, where early recognition and prompt escalation can mean the difference between recovery and rapid clinical decline.

The importance of sepsis recognition in maternity care will also be discussed. Sepsis in a pregnant or postpartum woman is a life-threatening emergency that presents unique challenges due to physiological changes in pregnancy, dual concern for mother and fetus, and the potential for rapid deterioration.

Timely treatment of sepsis significantly reduces the risk of complications and improves patient outcomes across all care settings. Despite advances in health care, sepsis continues to be a leading global cause of death. Its rapid onset and often nonspecific symptoms can delay diagnosis, making early clinical vigilance and prompt treatment essential. By raising awareness and enhancing frontline response, we can reduce sepsis-related morbidity and mortality.
